Berklee Today once called him “the multi-dimensional composer.” That’s oversimplifying language for a concert stage classical composer and jazz-rock keyboard master who for decades now has created orchestral, chamber, vocal and solo works commissioned, performed or recorded by world-renowned artists such as guitarist John Williams, opera star Angelika Kirchschlager, conductor Dennis Russell-Davies, the Vienna Symphony Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and others.

Brazilian-American artist Miguel Kertsman is out with the album "Paradoxes", and this is an album that resides safely and solidly inside of the progressive rock universe and tradition. In this case with a bit of a retro-oriented but also varied and expressive style being explored. Major cues come from the big names of the 1970s, and to my ears at least Camel, Genesis and Pink Floyd are possibly the most likely sources of inspiration here, and presumably with a little bit of Yes and arguably a touch of Gentle Giant brought into play here too. But this mostly instrumental production comes with a few additional side steps along the way. Wandering piano movements with more of a defined classical music expression is a recurring feature, and atmospheric laden, synthesizer and keyboard dominated passages that wouldn't have been out of place on an Isao Tomita album appear at regular intervals too. With a little bit of a flirt with jazz-rock appearing on occasion. Hence there is plenty of variation at hand here, and everything is explored with a sound and production that adds a vintage sounding quality to the landscapes explored. An album to seek out if you love 70's progressive rock in general, have a bit of a fancy with the more approachable symphonic varieties of the form in particular, you enjoy bands being creative and expressive with that form and who find that instrumental compositions are generally interesting and intriguing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0732/6856/0166/files/Miguel-Kertsman_Paradoxes_cover-front_600x600_ad6d1422-f778-43e0-8b8a-f5b53136bd81.png?v=1773248925
miguel-kertsman-three-concertos-cd
Miguel Kertsman - Three Concertos [CD]

New Orchestral album | London Philharmonic Orchestra, Dennis Russell Davies and solo virtuosi: Marina Piccinini, flute, Martin Kuuskmann, bassoon, Orsolya Korcsolan, violin, Gergely Sugar, Horn & Shofar

“You hear this music in your mind and you want to share it with other human beings.” – Miguel Kertsman

Three Concertos, Chamber Symphony No. 2 - New York of 50 Doors - London Philharmonic Ochestra - Dennis Russell Davies

Miguel Kertsman - Three Concertos, Chamber Symphony No. 2 'New York of 50 Doors'

Brazilian-American composer, Miguel Kertsman, writes in numerous genres embracing classical music, jazz, progressive rock, electronica and film, bridging these diverse elements to craft a unique sound world. Concerto Brasileiro explores lyricism and modernity through solemn chorale-like writing and seductive dances laced with Brazilian folk rhythms. Uncommon sonorities, haunting themes and ethereal landscapes mark out the Concerto for Violin, Horn, Shofar and Orchestra, while traditionalism and experimentation define the Journey for Bassoon and Orchestra. Trained at Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory, and the Julliard School, his versatility encompasses audio engineering, production, and composition in classical orchestral and chamber formats, musical theatre and songs, jazz, rock, pop, and interactive games. Born in Recife, Brazil, Brazilian dance forms and traditions are not far away in his diverse scores. In this album of concerti, we would therefore expect some surprises, as Heitor Villa-Lobos provided with his staid chamber Quintet, the beautifully lyrical Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, and the Hollywood-suggestive, rhythmic, symphonic crazy Choros No. 10. Kertsman's Concerto Brasileiro for Flute [Marina Piccinini], Strings, and Percussion certainly calls upon his roots. The opening atmospheric Overture quickly moves into a chorale with flute trills and glissandi. The brief middle section Choro [an old Brazilian interweaving, syncopated instrumental style, akin to bluegrass ragtime] includes the Brazilian tambourine, the pandeiro, while the final movement introduces the dances of his home region of Northeast Brazil, baião and xaxado, as well a humorous raplike-impovisational vocal form, repentes.

The four-movement Concerto for Violin [Orsolya Korcsolán], Horn, Shofar [Gergely Sugar], and Orchestra is a curious novelty, the second concerto for shofar to my knowledge [Meira Warshauer's Tekeeyah for Shofar (alt: Trombone) and Orchestra]. The Jewish ram's [or antelope's] horn is heard in the synagogue during the High Holy Days only, and its bright staccato is not present here but instead long, slow hockets and a rather sad tekeeyah goldola. Three tuned shofars are used. Abstract sonority with the horns are played against lyrical phrases of the soprano violin. The last section, mainly in 11/4, introduces organ and Brazilian berimboaus, baqueta stick-struck bows.

Journey for Bassoon [Martin Kuuskmann] and Orchestra is a long five-section spacious rhapsody with celesta, organ, and various percussion, including xylophone and the cuica Brazilian friction drum. The sections reflect home towns of Tallinn, Estonia, and Recife, Brazil, and the midpoint New York, this last site having a jazz flavor with drum kit and walking bass line. The bassoon goes through a variety of techniques: multiphonics, pure air, and key clicks. In this case with a bit of a retro-oriented but also varied and expressive style is being explored. Wandering piano movements with more of a defined classical music expression is a recurring feature, and atmospheric laden, synthesiser and keyboard-dominated passages that wouldn't have been out of place on an Isao Tomita album appear at regular intervals too. With a little bit of a flirt with jazz-rock appearing on occasion.

Hence there is plenty of variation at hand here, and everything is explored with a sound and production that adds a vintage-sounding quality to the landscapes explored. An album to seek out if you love 70's progressive rock in general, have a bit of a fancy with the more approachable symphonic varieties of the form in particular, you enjoy bands being creative and expressive with that form and who find that instrumental compositions are generally interesting and intriguing.

Miguel Kertsman’s works have been performed or recorded by world class artists including guitarist John Williams, singer Angelika Kirchschlager, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Vienna Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Conductor Dennis Russell Davies, flutist Marina Piccinini to name a few.

2025 - New album "PARADOXES" out on October 3!
