For its 75th anniversary, the Swiss audio manufacturer has joined Fidelio 2xHD for a double LP that celebrates the performances its equipment was built to capture.

The programme opens with Bill Evans’s “These Foolish Things”, Sonny Rollins’s “Blue Room” and Emilie-Claire Barlow’s “La belle dame sans regrets”. It then moves through selections by Miles Davis and Quincy Jones at Montreux, film music performed by Orchestre FILMharmonique, and more intimate works for smaller ensembles. That variety gives the collection a purpose beyond commemoration: each recording offers a different way to listen for presence, scale, texture and the atmosphere of a performance.

The announced production credits are equally central to the release. Mastering took place at 2xHD using Nagra equipment; the records were cut all analogue at Bernie Grundman Mastering, plated by Mastercraft and pressed at Le Vinylist in Quebec. 2xHD’s analogue tape-transfer approach uses carefully adapted Nagra playback equipment to preserve the musical detail held in the source recordings.

On paper, this is a fitting tribute to a company whose recorders have long been associated with capturing sound faithfully. The 45 rpm double-LP format gives this wide-ranging selection room to unfold. Its final measure, of course, will be the experience of playing the finished pressing.

This is an editorial preview based on the announced programme and production details, not a listening review of a finished copy.

Album: Various Artists — Nagra: 75th Anniversary Collection Album
Label: 2xHD - AFID1303
Format: Two LPs, Vinyl, Stereo, 180g, 45rpm, import
Country: Canada
Genre: Jazz

Tracklist:

LP 1 · Side A

Bill Evans — “These Foolish Things”
Sonny Rollins — “Blue Room”
Emilie-Claire Barlow — “La belle dame sans regrets”

LP 1 · Side B

Miles Davis & Quincy Jones — “Introduction”
Miles Davis & Quincy Jones — “Boplicity”
Miles Davis & Quincy Jones — “The Maids of Cadiz”
Stade — “Château de Chillon”

LP 2 · Side A

Jazz Ensemble — “The Pink Panther”
Orchestre FILMharmonique and Francis Choinière — “Raiders March”
Orchestre FILMharmonique and Francis Choinière — “Hedwig’s Theme”

LP 2 · Side B

Mathieu Désy — “Bend”
Monique Pagé and Chœur Radio Ville-Marie — Introduction from Théodore Dubois’s Les sept paroles du Christ
Stéphane Tétreault, Noémie Raymond and Valérie Milot — “The Swan”, by Camille Saint-Saëns
