Etta James is a special lady, and is very much missed. Her voice range of music was exceptional. She performed, The American Song Book / The Standards, and The Blues equally well.

Released in 1962, “Etta James Sings for Lovers” came out during a time when Etta James was establishing herself as one of the premier vocalists in the music industry. The early 1960s were a fertile period for soul and R&B music, and James was at the forefront of this movement. It’s about an album collection of romantic ballads and standards that showcase her powerful and emotive vocal abilities: known primarily for her blues and R&B hits, this album allows her to explore jazz standards and love ballads, demonstrating her ability to convey complex emotions and connect with listeners on a deep level.

The album features accomplished session musicians who provide a sophisticated and polished sound: over the years, “Etta James Sings for Lovers” has been appreciated as a classic example of a significant part of her discography, beloved by fans for its timeless quality. The arrangements feature lush orchestration, with strings and horns providing a rich backdrop for James’ vocals and at the time of its release, the album was well-received by critics who praised James’ vocal prowess and the sophisticated arrangements.

Tracks like “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “These Foolish Things” have become associated with her, adding to the rich tapestry of interpretations of these songs and while Etta James is often celebrated for her blues and R&B contributions, this album broadened her appeal to jazz and pop audiences.

This release is part of the Ermitage Yellow Coloured LP Records Series. Ermitage Distribution is made using as a source exclusively Production Master Tape Archives. Launched in the mid-1980s, Ermitage is an Italy-based independent classical music label and a distributor and re-issue of music.

Ermitage’s catalogue includes titles from luminaries such as the aforementioned Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, plus Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Ornette Colman, Sonny Rollins, Billie Holiday, etc.

The label’s first classical music releases were several vinyl records by the legendary Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, which were then followed by many and varied releases on CD with a focus on opera, symphonic and chamber music. But the part that interests us here is Ermitage, which is the company’s music distribution and re-issue department.

The label’s first classical music releases were several vinyl records by the legendary Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, which were then followed by many and varied releases on LP Records with a focus on opera, symphonic and chamber music. But the part that interests us here is Ermitage/Opera Leader Ltd, which is the company’s music distribution and re-issue department. Somehow or other (I’ve yet to find out exactly how – watch this space!), Ermitage’s owner, Gianni Salvioni, managed to negotiate with the relevant labels to acquire the rights to re-release, on 180g vinyl, a raft of seminal jazz albums. This process began in the late 1990s /early 2000s and resulted in Salvioni amassing an enviable archive of production copies and production masters. Most of these tapes are ‘flat’, in other words, unequalised and uncompressed production copies. From there, he produced Ermitage’s various vinyl releases that are already on the market. The tapes were then subsequently placed in his very well-maintained tape archive.
