How STS Analog turns original analogue masters into high-quality 15 ips reel-to-reel tape editions

For serious analogue listeners, the quality of a reel tape copy depends on far more than simply placing one tape recorder beside another.

The entire duplication chain matters.

At STS Analog, the philosophy is built around real-time analogue duplication, carefully calibrated professional equipment, premium tape stock and strict quality control — with the goal of preserving as much of the musical information, dynamics, tone and spatial realism of the source master as possible.

 

This is where the process begins.

FROM THE MASTER TAPE

At the heart of the STS Analog system is the original analogue master or carefully prepared analogue production master.

Rather than using high-speed duplication, the programme is played back at normal recording speed and copied in real time — 1:1.

For many classic STS productions, the celebrated duplication chain has been based around the legendary:

PHILIPS EL3501 → 6 × PHILIPS N4522

The Philips EL3501 serves as the master playback machine, feeding a carefully aligned bank of Philips N4522 reel-to-reel recorders.

Only a limited number of tapes can therefore be produced during each complete master playback.

That is fundamentally different from industrial high-speed duplication.

WHY THE PHILIPS EL3501?

The Philips EL3501 is one of the most remarkable professional tape machines produced by Philips.

Built during the golden era of analogue recording, it was engineered as a serious studio machine with exceptionally substantial transport construction and professional recording electronics.

Within the STS analogue chain, the EL3501 has become particularly famous as the master playback machine used to reproduce the source tape before duplication.

Its role is critical.

Every transient, harmonic detail, ambience cue and low-level musical signal recovered from the master must pass through this stage before reaching the duplication recorders.

SIX PHILIPS N4522 RECORDERS

The next stage is one of the most distinctive elements of the STS duplication system.

A bank of six Philips N4522 machines is used to record the programme simultaneously.

The N4522 is particularly well suited to this application because it is a genuine ¼-inch, half-track stereo machine capable of 15 ips / 38 cm/s operation.

In its professional-style configuration, the N4522 offers:

For duplication work, every machine must be aligned so that the resulting tapes perform consistently when played on correctly calibrated high-end reel-to-reel recorders.

REAL-TIME 1:1 DUPLICATION

Real-time duplication is essential to the STS philosophy.

If an album lasts 45 minutes, approximately 45 minutes are required to duplicate it.

There is no accelerated production process.

The master runs at normal speed while each destination machine records at the same speed.

This allows the tape recorder, heads, electronics and magnetic tape to operate under the conditions for which they were designed.

The result is a duplication process intended to preserve:

15 IPS — 38 CM/S

Many STS Analog releases are produced at:

15 IPS / 38 CM/S

For serious two-track reel-to-reel listening, 15 ips remains one of the most desirable tape speeds.

Compared with slower consumer formats, 15 ips can provide exceptionally strong performance in areas such as:

• High-frequency response
• Transient accuracy
• Reduced modulation noise
• Improved signal stability
• Excellent dynamic presentation
• Greater perceived openness and realism

It is one of the principal reasons properly produced master tape copies can deliver such an extraordinary listening experience.

¼-INCH — 2-TRACK STEREO

STS Analog releases are typically produced using a professional-style:

¼-inch — 2-Track Stereo / Half-Track configuration

Instead of dividing the tape into four narrow tracks, half-track stereo dedicates approximately half of the usable tape width to each stereo channel.

This provides substantially more magnetic area per channel than the traditional domestic four-track format.

For high-quality analogue reproduction, this is an important advantage.

CALIBRATION IS EVERYTHING

A premium reel tape copy can only be as good as the calibration of the machines used to create it.

Before duplication, the recorders must be correctly aligned for the selected tape formulation and operating standard.

Important parameters include:

• Head azimuth
• Record bias
• Record level
• Playback level
• Equalisation
• Frequency response
• Channel balance
• Tape tension
• Transport stability
• Head condition
• Reference fluxivity

STS has historically used 320 nWb/m as a reference level for important parts of its analogue duplication system.

Precise machine alignment is essential because even a superb recorder will not perform correctly if calibration is inaccurate.

CCIR / IEC AND NAB EQ CURVE

Equalisation standards are another important consideration.

Many European professional master tapes were recorded using CCIR / IEC equalisation, while many North American machines and recordings use NAB.

STS Analog editions may therefore be produced according to the appropriate equalisation requirement of the release.

For collectors, matching the playback equalisation of the machine to the recorded tape is extremely important.

Playing a CCIR tape using NAB equalisation — or vice versa — can noticeably alter the tonal balance.

PREMIUM MAGNETIC TAPE STOCK

The physical recording medium is just as important as the machine.

Modern STS editions make use of professional magnetic tape manufactured for high-quality analogue recording.

Recording The Masters tape formulations are particularly important within today’s reel-to-reel world.

The objective is not simply durability.

A premium tape formulation must also provide:

• Stable magnetic performance
• Low noise
• High output capability
• Excellent frequency response
• Good mechanical consistency
• Long-term archival stability

NO HIGH-SPEED MASS DUPLICATION

One of the major differences between premium master tape production and historical commercial prerecorded tape manufacturing is duplication speed.

Traditional mass-market prerecorded tapes were frequently duplicated at several times normal playback speed.

That approach allowed enormous quantities to be manufactured economically.

STS Analog follows a very different philosophy.

The music is duplicated in real time.

The process is slower.

Production quantities are smaller.

But for the serious analogue listener, sound quality — not production speed — is the priority.

QUALITY CONTROL

After recording, the work is not necessarily finished.

Each reel must meet the required production standard.

Depending on the edition, quality-control procedures may include checking:

• Tape transport
• Physical tape condition
• Leader tape
• Reel condition
• Packaging
• Identification and numbering
