The song became an international sensation, reaching the top of the charts in the United States and winning the Grammy Award for record of the Year in 1965.
In addition to its critical acclaim, "Getz/Gilberto" was a commercial success. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and remained on the chart for over 96 weeks.
