Tape Review: A Tribute to Billie Holiday

LILS MACKINTOSH — A TRIBUTE TO BILLIE HOLIDAY

A Live Jazz Performance Preserved on Analogue Tape

A tribute to Billie Holiday places the song and its emotional meaning at the centre of attention. For Lils Mackintosh, this repertoire offered a way to honour a formative influence while bringing her own voice to the performance.

One of the distinguished voices of Dutch jazz, Mackintosh built a career encompassing jazz and blues. On A Tribute to Billie Holiday, the live setting adds another dimension: the relationship between singer, musicians and audience becomes part of the musical occasion.

For reel-to-reel enthusiasts, the recording process is a particular attraction. According to the supplied recording notes, the concert was captured fully in analogue on a Philips EL 3501, using Van den Hul Carbon Fibre cables. STS Analog describes the tape edition as transferred directly from the original master tape.

That provenance gives listeners a compelling reason to explore the release. Vocal jazz rewards close attention to phrasing, breath, the shading of a sustained note and the space between singer and accompaniment. During an audition, these are the details worth listening for—alongside the atmosphere of the concert itself.

The appeal of this album begins with Mackintosh’s interpretation of Holiday’s musical legacy. Its analogue presentation adds the physical pleasure of threading the tape, settling into the performance and allowing the programme to unfold.

For collectors who enjoy live vocal jazz, this is an intriguing meeting of repertoire, performance and recording craft.
