To commemorate Nagra’s 75th anniversary, Nagra and acclaimed Canadian audiophile label 2xHD Fusion are preparing a special anniversary album devoted to the beauty, realism and emotional power of analogue recording.

The forthcoming Deluxe Two-Reel Tape Edition promises to be the most direct and uncompromising expression of this project.

This is not simply an anniversary compilation carrying a celebrated name. It is intended as a demonstration of the values that made Nagra legendary: musical truth, mechanical precision, exceptional signal integrity and respect for the original recording.

THE NAGRA LEGACY

Nagra’s story is inseparable from the history of recorded sound.

Its portable professional recorders transformed location recording by combining extraordinary engineering with reliability and remarkable sonic performance. Machines such as the Nagra III, IV-S and later Nagra T became trusted instruments in film production, broadcasting, documentary work and music recording.

The Nagra IV-S, in particular, became an analogue icon: beautifully engineered, exceptionally dependable and capable of capturing performances with a naturalness that continues to inspire collectors and recording professionals.

The new anniversary release therefore feels especially appropriate on open reel. Magnetic tape is not merely another format associated with Nagra—it is part of the company’s identity.

THE 2xHD FUSION APPROACH

2xHD’s analogue mastering philosophy is built around extracting the musical information preserved within original recordings while avoiding unnecessary alteration.

Its specialised playback chain employs a modified Nagra T transport with custom high-end tube playback electronics, OCC silver wiring, a carbon-fibre head block and dedicated tube head amplification. The purpose of this carefully optimised chain is not to manufacture artificial warmth, but to preserve dynamics, spatial information, tonal texture and the natural atmosphere surrounding the musicians.

At 15 ips, two-track open-reel tape can offer remarkable transient freedom, stable imaging, extended tonal colour and a physical sense of musical presence. When the source and duplication chain are treated with equal care, tape does not simply reproduce the notes—it can restore the scale, air and energy of the original performance.
