A properly maintained tape path is fundamental to extracting the best performance from an open-reel recorder. Oxide deposits, dust and contamination can interfere with tape-to-head contact, while magnetised ferrous components may compromise recorded information. Recording The Masters recommends keeping the tape-contact surfaces clean and specifically places cleaning and demagnetising at the beginning of machine-calibration work.

This guide applies broadly to classic professional and domestic open-reel machines, but the service manual for your individual recorder always takes priority because head materials, pinch-roller compounds and cleaning recommendations differ between machines. For example, Revox’s current B77 MK III manual specifically cautions against hard cleaning objects and says the capstan shaft and pressure roller should be cleaned as dry as possible.
1. WHY CLEANING MATTERS
Magnetic tape physically contacts—or runs extremely close to—the heads and associated tape-path components. During operation, very small quantities of oxide, binder residue, dust and other contamination can accumulate.
A dirty tape path can contribute to:
- Reduced high-frequency response
- Loss of clarity and detail
- Poor tape-to-head contact
- Uneven channel performance
- Dropouts
- Increased wow or flutter if guides or transport components become contaminated
- Tape tracking problems
- Additional tape and head wear
Recording The Masters recommends keeping every part of the tape mechanism that contacts the tape free from debris and contamination.

2. WHAT YOU NEED
For routine tape-path maintenance, prepare:
- High-quality lint-free or low-shedding cleaning swabs
- Suitable tape-head/tape-path cleaning fluid
- High-purity isopropyl alcohol only where compatible with the machine and component
- Manufacturer-approved rubber/pinch-roller cleaner where required
- Bright inspection lamp
- Clean lint-free cloth
- Appropriate screwdriver for removable head covers
- Proper AC tape-head demagnetiser, if your machine requires demagnetising
- The recorder’s service or operating manual
Avoid improvising with abrasive materials.
Never use sandpaper, metal tools or other hard objects on a tape-head face. Revox explicitly warns against hard objects, particularly metal ones, when cleaning the B77 MK III tape path.
3. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Before cleaning:
1. Stop the recorder.
2. Remove all tape from the machine.
3. Switch the recorder off.
For normal external tape-path cleaning, disconnecting the recorder from the mains is a sensible additional precaution if access requires removal of covers or puts you near exposed electrical areas.
4. Allow hot components to cool if necessary.
5. Illuminate the tape path clearly.
Look carefully at:
- Erase head
- Record head
- Playback head
- Combination record/playback head
- Tape guides
- Guide posts
- Tape lifters
- Capstan
- Pinch roller
- Tension arms and rollers
- Any fixed metal surface contacted by the tape
4. INSPECT BEFORE CLEANING
Use a strong light and inspect the entire tape-contact surface.
Typical contamination appears as:
- Brown oxide deposits
- Dark polished residue
- Dust
- Sticky deposits
- Bands of oxide corresponding to the tape width
Also look for mechanical problems that cleaning cannot cure:
- Head wear grooves
- Flat spots
- Cracked or glazed pinch rollers
- Damaged guides
- Loose components
- Tape scraping against reel flanges
- Abnormal tape wandering
- Incorrect tape height
Do not attempt to correct head azimuth, zenith or guide alignment merely because something appears visually unusual. Those adjustments require appropriate test equipment and calibration procedures.
5. CLEANING THE HEADS
Apply a small quantity of the appropriate cleaning fluid to the swab. The swab should be damp, not dripping.
Clean the head face gently.
Concentrate especially on the narrow area where the tape travels across the head.
Continue with fresh swabs until they come away clean.
Recommended sequence
Erase Head → Record Head → Playback Head → Guides → Lifters → Capstan
Using fresh swabs prevents material removed from one component from simply being transferred to another.
Do not flood the head assembly. Avoid allowing liquid to run behind the head block or into bearings, switches or electronics.
6. CLEANING TAPE GUIDES & POSTS
Every surface touching the tape should be inspected.
Oxide often collects where it is least obvious:
- Upper and lower edges of guides
- Behind guide flanges
- Around fixed posts
- At tape lifters
- Around tension rollers
A guide that looks clean from the front may still carry deposits along its tape-contact edge.
RTM’s professional best-practice guidance likewise stresses keeping all tape-contact parts free of contaminants.
7. CLEANING THE CAPSTAN
The polished capstan shaft must remain clean because it forms part of the precision speed-control system.
Rotate it manually only when the manufacturer’s instructions permit it and the machine is safely powered down.
Clean the circumference rather than concentrating on only the visible front surface.
Remove:
- Oxide
- Binder residue
- Dirt
- Grease transferred from fingers
Do not lubricate the capstan shaft unless the service manual explicitly calls for it.
Revox states that its B77 MK III should not be oiled and recommends keeping its capstan shaft as dry as possible during cleaning.
8. THE PINCH ROLLER REQUIRES DIFFERENT CARE
The pinch roller is rubber or an elastomer, not a metal tape head.
That distinction matters.
Do not automatically apply 99% IPA to every pinch roller. Solvent compatibility depends on the roller material and manufacturer’s recommendations, and inappropriate solvents can alter some rubber compounds.
Use:
- The machine manufacturer’s recommended method, or
- A rubber cleaner specifically suitable for the roller material.
For the current B77 MK III, Revox advises cleaning the pressure roller as dry as possible.
Inspect the roller for:
- Hardening
- Glazing
- Cracking
- Flat spots
- Sticky surfaces
- Uneven wear
A mechanically deteriorated roller needs restoration or replacement; cleaning cannot repair damaged rubber.
9. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN?
There is no universal number of operating hours that suits every machine and tape stock.
Professional practice is considerably more frequent than many domestic users expect. Recording The Masters recommends cleaning tape-contact parts at least daily in its best-practice guidance.
For enthusiast use, a practical approach is:
Before an important recording: inspect and clean.
Before playing an expensive master-tape copy: inspect the path first.
After playing an unknown vintage tape: inspect immediately.
Whenever visible oxide appears: clean.
After a shedding or contaminated tape: thoroughly clean before inserting another tape.
A clean new tape can still leave microscopic contamination, while an unstable vintage tape can contaminate a transport remarkably quickly.
10. WHAT IS DEMAGNETISING?
Tape-recorder heads and certain ferrous tape-path parts can retain residual magnetism.
A proper demagnetiser generates an alternating magnetic field. When that field is gradually reduced by moving the energized demagnetiser farther away, residual magnetisation can be reduced toward zero.
The critical concept is gradual field reduction.
That is why simply touching a component with a demagnetiser and switching it off is incorrect.
RTM explicitly warns not to switch a demagnetiser on or off within approximately 3 ft / 1 metre of the tape machine, because the transient field can leave parts magnetised instead of demagnetising them.
11. WHAT SHOULD BE DEMAGNETISED?
Only appropriate ferromagnetic tape-path components should be considered.
Depending on the machine, these may include:
- Record head
- Playback head
- Record/playback head
- Erase-head metal structure where appropriate
- Ferrous tape guides
- Ferrous guide posts
- Metal lifters
But machine construction varies.
Do not assume every metal-looking component needs demagnetising.
Aluminium, brass, stainless alloys, ceramic components and certain specialised head materials may behave differently.
The service manual remains the authority.
12. BEFORE DEMAGNETISING — CRITICAL PRECAUTIONS
Remove every recorded tape.
That includes:
- Music tapes
- Master-tape copies
- Alignment tapes
- Calibration tapes
- Test tapes
- Leader-attached recorded reels
Keep them well away from the operating area.
A demagnetiser produces an intentionally strong alternating magnetic field.
Also move magnetically sensitive items away, including magnetic media that might be affected.
Switch the tape recorder OFF.
Do not demagnetise a powered recorder unless its manufacturer explicitly specifies otherwise.
Clean first.
Demagnetising a dirty head makes little sense and makes safe positioning more difficult.
13. THE CORRECT DEMAGNETISING PROCEDURE
This is the key sequence.
STEP 1 — CLEAR THE MACHINE
Remove all tape.
Switch the recorder off.
Confirm that recorded tapes and test tapes are well away.
STEP 2 — MOVE AWAY FROM THE DECK
Position yourself at least approximately 1 metre / 3 feet away.
STEP 3 — SWITCH THE DEMAGNETISER ON
Turn the demagnetiser on while it is away from the machine.
RTM specifically recommends this precaution.
STEP 4 — APPROACH SLOWLY
Bring the energised demagnetiser toward the tape path gradually.
Do not rush.
STEP 5 — TREAT EACH APPROPRIATE COMPONENT
Move the tip slowly around the head face and appropriate ferrous guides.
Use smooth movements.
Unless the demagnetiser manufacturer specifically requires contact:
Do not strike or scrape the head surface with the tip.
The magnetic field does the work.
STEP 6 — DO NOT SWITCH IT OFF
Keep the unit energized.
STEP 7 — WITHDRAW SLOWLY
Move away from the machine gradually.
Continue increasing the distance until you are at least approximately 1 metre / 3 feet away.
STEP 8 — SWITCH OFF ONLY WHEN WELL AWAY
Now turn the demagnetiser off.
That gradual retreat is the essential part of the process.
14. THE GOLDEN RULE
NEVER SWITCH A DEMAGNETISER ON OR OFF BESIDE THE HEADS.
Switch it ON far away → approach slowly → demagnetise → withdraw slowly → switch OFF far away.
This one procedure prevents one of the most common demagnetising mistakes.
15. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DEMAGNETISE?
Unlike cleaning, demagnetising should not automatically be treated as a ritual performed after every reel.
RTM includes demagnetising as part of preparing a machine for calibration, but the appropriate interval depends on the recorder, head construction, service history and manufacturer recommendations.
A sensible 2026 collector approach is:
Clean frequently.
Inspect regularly.
Demagnetise when appropriate.
Do not demagnetise compulsively.
If the recorder manufacturer specifically states that conventional demagnetising is unnecessary or inappropriate for its head construction, follow that advice.
16. COMMON DEMAGNETISING MISTAKES
Avoid these:
- Switching the demagnetiser on next to a head
- Switching it off next to a head
- Pulling it suddenly away
- Demagnetising with recorded tape mounted
- Leaving valuable tapes nearby
- Touching delicate head faces aggressively
- Demagnetising components indiscriminately
- Using an unknown or defective tool
- Ignoring the recorder’s service manual
- Confusing demagnetisation with electronic calibration
Demagnetising does not correct:
- Azimuth
- Tape speed
- Bias
- Equalisation
- Record level
- Playback level
- Head wear
- Tape tension
Those are separate mechanical/electrical service procedures.

18. AFTER CLEANING & DEMAGNETISING
Before mounting an important tape:
- Allow any approved cleaning fluid to evaporate completely.
- Confirm that no swab fibres remain.
- Inspect the head faces under bright light.
- Check the tape guides.
- Check the pinch roller.
- Thread expendable or ordinary tape first if you have carried out significant maintenance.
- Observe tape travel.
- Confirm smooth winding.
- Listen for abnormal scraping or transport noise.
- Only then mount valuable programme or calibration tape.
RTM recommends observing the tape path during calibration and checking that tape remains flat and smooth through the heads and guides and winds correctly between reel flanges.
19. SIGNS YOUR REEL TAPE MACHINE NEEDS MORE THAN CLEANING
Professional service should be considered if you encounter:
- Deep head wear grooves
- Unequal channel response
- Persistent high-frequency loss after cleaning
- Severe tape wandering
- Damaged guides
- Hard or cracked pinch roller
- Unstable speed
- Excessive wow/flutter
- Abnormal tape tension
- Tape scraping
- Poor reel centring
- Unusual mechanical noise
- Record/playback level discrepancies
- Suspected head-alignment errors
Cleaning is maintenance—not a substitute for mechanical restoration and calibration.
20. SPECIAL CARE WITH VALUABLE MASTER TAPES
Before playing an expensive 15 ips, 2-track master-tape copy:
Inspect → Clean → Verify transport → Play.
Never use a valuable tape as the first test after maintenance.
Keep calibration tapes particularly far from an active demagnetiser. They are precision reference media, not ordinary programme tape.
RTM’s current FAQ also recommends regular head/capstan cleaning and correct machine calibration for optimum recording quality.
