In high-end analogue reproduction, every detail matters. From the condition of the original recording and the choices made during mastering to the cutting of the lacquer and the precision of the final pressing, each stage influences what eventually reaches the listener.
The 1‑Step vinyl process was developed to simplify one of the most delicate parts of record manufacturing: the electroplating sequence between the freshly cut lacquer and the finished LP.
By eliminating two intermediate metal-copying stages, 1‑Step production seeks to preserve more of the information contained in the original lacquer grooves. When combined with exceptional mastering, premium materials and rigorous quality control, the result can be a vinyl record of remarkable clarity, immediacy and musical presence.
Mastering and Pressing Are Not the Same
Although the term “1‑Step mastering” is often used informally, 1‑Step is more accurately described as a plating and pressing process.
Mastering is the stage during which the source recording is prepared for vinyl. The mastering engineer carefully manages level, frequency balance, dynamics, stereo information and playing time before cutting the finished programme into a lacquer-coated disc.
The 1‑Step process begins after that lacquer has been cut.
This distinction is important because the words “1‑Step” do not identify the source used to master the record. A 1‑Step LP may be cut from an original analogue master tape, an analogue production copy or a high-resolution digital master. The source and mastering chain must therefore be confirmed separately for every release.
How Conventional Vinyl Records Are Made
Most traditionally manufactured LPs use a multi-stage electroplating process designed to produce enough stampers for a large commercial pressing run.
First, the mastered audio is cut into a lacquer disc. The lacquer is then cleaned, coated with an electrically conductive silver layer and placed into an electroforming bath, where a metal negative of its grooves is created.
This first metal part is commonly known as the father or metal master.
The father is used to create a positive metal copy called the mother. The mother can then produce one or more negative stampers, which are fitted inside a record press. Heated vinyl is placed between the two stampers and compressed under carefully controlled pressure to form the finished LP.
The conventional sequence is therefore:
Mastered audio → lacquer → father → mother → stamper → finished record
This process offers an important commercial advantage. A father can produce multiple mothers, while each mother can produce several stampers. It allows thousands of records to be manufactured and also makes future repressings more practical.
How the 1‑Step Process Is Different
The 1‑Step method removes the conventional father-to-mother-to-stamper sequence.
Instead, the first metal part grown directly from the lacquer is finished and converted into the production stamper itself. That stamper is then installed in the press and used to manufacture the records.
The shortened production chain becomes:
Mastered audio → lacquer → direct stamper → finished record
This means the grooves pressed into the final LP originate from a metal part formed directly against the lacquer. There are no intermediate mother and secondary-stamper generations between them.
It is a deceptively simple idea, but it requires extraordinary precision. Because the first metal part becomes the production tool, every stage - from cleaning and silvering the lacquer to electroforming, separating, centring and finishing the stamper - must be performed with exceptional care.
Why Fewer Generations May Matter
The modulations inside a record groove are extremely small. They contain the musical information that will eventually be traced by the stylus and converted back into an electrical signal.
Each electroplating generation must reproduce those microscopic groove structures. Even when the process is completed to a very high standard, every additional physical transfer presents another opportunity for tiny imperfections to be introduced.
By eliminating two intermediate generations, 1‑Step production aims to reduce those opportunities and preserve the character of the original lacquer cut more directly.
The potential sonic benefits may include:

The finest examples do not simply sound more detailed. They can make the performance feel more coherent, natural and emotionally involving.
A 1‑Step Label Is Not a Guarantee
The 1‑Step process offers technical advantages, but the name alone cannot guarantee superior sound.
An LP record is the product of an entire production chain. Its final quality depends on the source recording, mastering decisions, condition of the equipment, lacquer cutting, electroplating, stamper preparation, vinyl formulation, press setup and quality control.
A beautifully mastered conventional LP can outperform a 1‑Step edition created from an inferior source or manufactured without sufficient care.
The 1‑Step process should therefore be understood as a method of preserving an excellent lacquer - not as a technique capable of correcting weaknesses already present in the recording or mastering.
If the lacquer contains excessive compression, poor tonal balance, distortion or an unsuitable cutting level, the direct stamper will reproduce those characteristics faithfully as well.
Does 1‑Step Mean All-Analogue?
Not necessarily.
A genuinely all-analogue production is commonly described as AAA:
* Analogue recording
* Analogue mixing and mastering
* Analogue lacquer cutting
The 1‑Step designation describes the plating route after the lacquer has been cut. It does not confirm whether the lacquer was cut directly from an original master tape or from a digital mastering source.
Collectors should look for clear and specific information such as:
* Cut directly from the original analogue master tapes
* All-analogue mastering chain
* No digital stage used
* Mastered and cut by a named engineer
* Pressed from a verified high-resolution digital transfer
Transparency matters. A carefully prepared digital source can produce an excellent record, but buyers should be able to understand exactly what they are purchasing.
Why Many 1‑Step Records Are Cut at 45 RPM
Many premium 1‑Step editions are presented as two or more LPs cut at 45 rpm.
The higher rotational speed provides more groove length for each second of music. Under suitable conditions, this can allow the cutting engineer to accommodate challenging musical passages with greater freedom and improve high-frequency performance.
Spreading an album across additional sides can also reduce playing time per side, allowing wider groove spacing and potentially higher cutting levels.
However, 45 rpm is not an essential part of the 1‑Step process. A 1‑Step album can also be manufactured at 33⅓ rpm. Speed, plating method and source provenance are separate production decisions.
What About 180-Gram LP?
Premium 1‑Step releases are frequently pressed on 180-gram or similarly substantial vinyl, sometimes using specialist low-noise compounds.
A heavier record can feel more luxurious and may offer improved physical stability when manufactured correctly. Nevertheless, weight alone does not determine sound quality.
A perfectly centred, flat and quiet standard-weight pressing can sound better than a poorly manufactured heavyweight LP. Vinyl purity, temperature control, pressing cycle, cooling time and careful handling are considerably more important than an impressive number printed on the packaging.
Premium vinyl should support the process, but it cannot replace excellent mastering and manufacturing.
Why 1‑Step Editions Are Usually Limited
The conventional three-step system is designed for scalability. Multiple mothers and stampers can be created from the original metal master, supporting large production quantities.
With 1‑Step plating, each lacquer normally yields only one direct production stamper. When that stamper reaches its approved operating limit or becomes damaged, a new lacquer must be cut and plated to continue production.
Producing several lacquers increases cost and demands extremely close control. Every new lacquer must match the approved mastering, cutting level and groove geometry as consistently as possible.
For these reasons, 1‑Step albums are normally produced in carefully controlled quantities. Many are numbered and presented in elaborate packaging, reflecting the specialist nature and higher cost of production.
However, there is no universal rule governing the size of a 1‑Step edition. The number of copies depends on the label, licensing agreement, number of lacquers cut, stamper policy and quality-control standard.
Nor does the retirement of one stamper make another edition technically impossible. A further run may be produced if the rights holder authorises new lacquers and additional manufacturing.
The Complete Audiophile Production Chain
The finest 1‑Step record is not created by one process in isolation. It is the result of every stage working together:
Exceptional source recording
Careful and sympathetic mastering
Precision lacquer cutting
Direct 1‑Step electroplating
Meticulous stamper preparation
Premium vinyl formulation
Controlled pressing and cooling
Strict inspection and listening tests
When all these elements are aligned, the finished LP can offer a remarkably transparent connection with the recording.
Vocals may appear with greater physical presence. Instruments can occupy more clearly defined positions within the soundstage. Microdynamic changes become easier to follow, while the atmosphere surrounding the musicians may feel more continuous and believable.
The listener is not merely hearing more information. The aim is to reduce the sense of machinery standing between the performance and the listening room.
More Than a Collectable Edition
Luxury packaging, individual numbering and strictly controlled quantities naturally make 1‑Step records attractive to collectors. Yet the true purpose of the process should remain musical.
A 1‑Step LP deserves attention because of what it may preserve - not simply because of its scarcity.
At its best, the process represents an uncompromising approach to vinyl manufacturing: begin with an outstanding source, create the finest possible master, cut the lacquer with precision and reproduce its grooves through the shortest practical plating route.
The result can be one of the most refined expressions of the modern vinyl record - quiet, revealing, immediate and deeply involving.
Fewer generations. Greater intimacy. A closer connection to the mastered performance.
