Few names in recorded sound carry quite the history of Nagra. For its 75th anniversary, the Swiss audio manufacturer has joined Fidelio 2xHD for a double LP that celebrates the performances its equipment was built to capture.

The programme opens with Bill Evans’s “These Foolish Things”, Sonny Rollins’s “Blue Room” and Emilie-Claire Barlow’s “La belle dame sans regrets”. It then moves through selections by Miles Davis and Quincy Jones at Montreux, film music performed by Orchestre FILMharmonique, and more intimate works for smaller ensembles. That variety gives the collection a purpose beyond commemoration: each recording offers a different way to listen for presence, scale, texture and the atmosphere of a performance.

The announced production credits are equally central to the release. Mastering took place at 2xHD using Nagra equipment; the records were cut all analogue at Bernie Grundman Mastering, plated by Mastercraft and pressed at Le Vinylist in Quebec. 2xHD’s analogue tape-transfer approach uses carefully adapted Nagra playback equipment to preserve the musical detail held in the source recordings.

The Ultimate High Quality CD (UHQ-CD)

The Ultimate High Quality CD was developed through an effort to improve audio quality by simply upgrading the materials used in ordinary CDs to higher quality materials. For the substrate a high-transparency and high-fluidity polycarbonate (a type of plastic) of the type used for LCD panels was used, while for the reflective layer, low-cost, common aluminium was replaced with a unique and expensive alloy of high-reflectivity. The Ultimate High Quality CD reproduces audio with greater precision and at a level that is impossible to achieve using conventional CD production technology.

All About Ultimate High-Quality CD (UHQ-CD):

UHQCD stands for Ultimate High-Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. Unlike conventional CDs, UHQCDs are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. Another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied to the softer photopolymer for scratch protection. The combination results in significantly reduced reflection of laser light inside the CD and an unmatched precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with standard CD players. Musically, the result is a sound image strongly reminiscent of analogue master tapes.
