The collaborations between Chet Baker and Art Pepper were originally issued in such a disparity of ways that it might seem difficult at first to think about them as a coherent body of work. Their first session, for instance, was originally segmented, with each tune being issued on a separate Bcompilation album. Many times the selections were Beven abridged, suppressing a solo here or there. (Although it was recorded at the Forum Theatre, in Los Angeles, the aforementioned date is not a live Nconcert but a studio session, with no audience.) Along with another equally splendid session, it was BNincluded in Baker and Pepper’s most famous album together, Playboys, which was also released (with a totally different cover but identical liner notes!) under the title Picture of Heath (the title of the first song, and a reminder that nearly all of the album’s tunes were Jimmy Heath’s compositions –two are by Art Pepper). Jazz critic Todd Selbert wrote about the Playboys sessions in one of its numerous reeditions: “In the relatively short history of jazz on record, many an album has been produced with the thinking that, if one star soloist can make great music, two can make greater music. This edition restores the complete sessions that produced this outstanding album.

Released in 1956 “Playboys” is a masterpiece by Chet Baker and Art Pepper. The album showcases the collaboration between two prominent West Coast jazz musicians and includes other notable players such as pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Curtis Counce, and drummer Lawrence Marable.

The album is known for its cool jazz style, characterized by smooth, lyrical improvisations and a relaxed, swinging feel. Due to potential legal issues with Playboy magazine, the album was reissued in 1961 as “Picture of Heath”. This name change also emphasized the contributions of saxophonist and composer Jimmy Heath, who wrote most of the tracks on the album that’s a prime example of the West Coast jazz style, which is known for its cool, relaxed sound, contrasting with the more aggressive bebop style of the East Coast.

“Playboys” features intricate arrangements and smooth, lyrical improvisations: tracks like “Picture of Heath” and “For Miles and Miles” highlight the seamless interplay between Baker’s trumpet and Pepper’s alto saxophone. Critics and jazz enthusiasts have praised the album for its cohesive ensemble work and the individual talents of the musicians.

The synergy between Baker and Pepper is particularly noted: they both bring a unique melodic and it captures a significant moment in the development of West Coast jazz and continues to be celebrated for its artistic achievements and historical.

This release is part of the Ermitage Yellow Coloured LP Records Series. Ermitage Distribution is made using as a source exclusively Production Master Tape Archives. Launched in the mid-1980s, Ermitage is an Italy-based independent classical music label and a distributor and re-issue of music.

Ermitage’s catalogue includes titles from luminaries such as the aforementioned Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, plus Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Ornette Colman, Sonny Rollins, Billie Holiday, etc.

The label’s first classical music releases were several vinyl records by the legendary Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, which were then followed by many and varied releases on LP Records with a focus on opera, symphonic and chamber music. But the part that interests us here is Ermitage/Opera Leader Ltd, which is the company’s music distribution and re-issue department. Somehow or other (I’ve yet to find out exactly how – watch this space!), Ermitage’s owner, Gianni Salvioni, managed to negotiate with the relevant labels to acquire the rights to re-release, on 180g vinyl, a raft of seminal jazz albums. This process began in the late 1990s /early 2000s and resulted in Salvioni amassing an enviable archive of production copies and production masters. Most of these tapes are ‘flat’, in other words, unequalised and uncompressed production copies. From there, he produced Ermitage’s various vinyl releases that are already on the market. The tapes were then subsequently placed in his very well-maintained tape archive.
