Audiophile Percussion + is an audiophile analogue collection showcasing a rich spectrum of grooves drawn from Pop, Rock, Latin, and Classical styles. The focus is on rhythm, groove, pulse, tempo, accents, dynamics, textures and colour, interpreted with precision and energy by the Musicus Percussion Ensemble, joined by guest multi-instrumentalist Robert Len.

It’s very audiophile-oriented, titled Percussion+, as it’s in the same category as the Audiophile System Test and Audiophile Speaker Setup. From pop and rock to Latin and classical, this explosive collection moves across a rich spectrum of grooves, driven by rhythm in all its forms - pulse, tempo, accents, dynamics, texture, and colour.

Performed with razor-sharp precision and electrifying energy by the Musicus Percussion Ensemble, joined by guest multi-instrumentalist Robert Len, Audiophile Percussion+ is rhythm, redefined.

The Audiophile Percussion + project was recorded in July 1999, at Montreal’s Claude Champagne Concert Hall on a Nagra T analog recorder at 15 ips on BASF SM468 tape. The recording was done using the A-B stereo microphone technique, using a pair of omni Brüel & Kjær 1-inch measurement microphones renowned for their high accuracy and sonic characteristics.

There were additional vintage tube microphones on many percussion elements – Neumann M49, Neumann U67 and AKG C12. The recording and mix were done live on a Studer model 089 console. Overdubs by multi-instrumentalist Robert Len were recorded at 2xHD’s studio, using a Neumann M50 and Josephson Engineering C617 microphones.

The 2xHD Mastering Process

For the 2xHD mastering of the recording on this album, the original 1/4", 15 ips CCIR master tapes were played on a Nagra-T modified with high-end tube playback electronics, wired with OCC silver cable from the playback head directly to a Telefunken EF806 tube. The Nagra T has one of the best transports ever made with four direct drive motors and two pinch rollers.
