Although celebrated primarily for his performances of Russian composers such as Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky, Mravinsky’s interpretations of Richard Wagner reveal an equally compelling mastery of orchestral color, architecture, and dramatic intensity.

This release presents a carefully restored selection of Wagner’s most celebrated orchestral excerpts, preserved from original master tapes housed in the Armenian Radio Archive. Recorded in the former Soviet Union, these historic performances capture the unmistakable sound of the legendary Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Mravinsky’s direction.

Rather than emphasising theatrical spectacle, Mravinsky uncovers the symphonic depth of Wagner’s music with remarkable precision, controlled power, and lyrical beauty. Transferred directly from original analogue tapes using meticulously restored professional Studer C37 tape machines, these recordings preserve the warmth, dynamic range, and authenticity of the original broadcasts while benefiting from modern archival restoration techniques.

This edition forms part of the ongoing collaboration between the Armenian Radio Archive, Schopper Audio, and Triston Master Recordings, dedicated to preserving historically important performances for future generations.

This release preserves an important chapter of twentieth-century conducting history, presenting Yevgeny Mravinsky’s Wagner interpretations in newly restored analogue sound drawn directly from the historic collections of the Armenian Radio Archive.
