PRESERVE THE TAPE. PRESERVE THE MUSIC.
Best practice for storing your reel-to-reel collection
A treasured audio reel tape may contain a remarkable artists music performance, a carefully produced master reel tape copy or a recording that exists nowhere else. Its future depends partly on what happens after the reels stop turning.
Good storage begins with a few consistent habits.
1 - CHOOSE A COOL, DRY, STABLE SPACE
For home collections, a cool room with approximately 35–40% relative humidity is a useful target. Monitor conditions with a thermometer and hygrometer.
Avoid damp basements, hot lofts, direct sunlight and shelving beside radiators. Stable conditions matter: repeated changes in temperature and humidity can place additional stress on tapes.
2 - GIVE EVERY REEL A PROTECTIVE HOME
Store reels upright in properly fitting boxes, with enough support to prevent leaning or distortion. Choose acid-free, lignin-free archival boxes when replacing damaged packaging.
Heavy reels benefit from boxes that support the hub. Keep your collection away from potential leaks, preferably above floor level, and avoid crushing boxes together on crowded shelves.
3 - PAY ATTENTION TO THE TAPE PACK
The edge of the wound tape should be smooth and even, without protruding layers, steps or loose sections.
A dedicated library-wind mode or suitable playback-speed winding can help produce a good storage pack. Repeatedly poor winding may indicate that the machine needs servicing. Check reel flanges for bending or contact with the tape.
4 - UNDERSTAND “TAILS OUT”
For conventional programme reels, leaving the tape on the take-up reel after complete playback is a common storage practice. Label it TAILS OUT and rewind before listening again.
Follow any instructions supplied with specialist tapes. A smooth, properly tensioned pack remains essential.
5 - KEEP STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS AWAY
Avoid storing tapes beside loudspeaker magnets, motors, transformers or demagnetizers.
Before operating a head demagnetizer, move recorded reels and calibration tapes well away from the working area.
6 - LET COLD TAPES ACCLIMATISE
If a reel arrives from cold transport or controlled cool storage, allow it to acclimatise before opening and playing it. The required time depends on the temperature difference and packaging.
Avoid rushing a cold tape into a warm, humid listening room.
7 - HANDLE WITH CARE
Use clean, dry hands and hold reels by the hub or flanges. Avoid touching the tape surface, squeezing the tape pack or bending the reel.
Keep food, drinks, smoke and dust away from your tapes and playback equipment.
8 - STOP WHEN A TAPE SHOWS DISTRESS
Sticking, squealing, heavy shedding or abnormal resistance deserve investigation. Stop playback rather than forcing the tape through the transport.
Not every troublesome tape has sticky-shed syndrome. Baking is a specialist treatment for certain affected formulations, intended to make transfer possible. It is not routine maintenance or a permanent cure.
9 - KEEP THE RECORDING’S DETAILS
Your catalogue should include:
• Artist, title and unique reel number
• Playback speed, tape width and track format
• NAB or IEC equalisation
• Tape stock, where known
• Any noise-reduction system
• Recording date and provenance
• Condition, winding orientation and transfer history
Keep labels and documentation with the correct reel.
10 - PROTECT IRREPLACEABLE CONTENT
For unique recordings, arrange a careful digital preservation transfer alongside continued care of the original tape. 24-bit/96 kHz WAV or Broadcast WAV is a sensible preservation choice.
Keep an unprocessed preservation master, separate listening copies and backups in different locations. Retain the original reel after transfer.

💬 HOW DO YOU STORE YOUR COLLECTION?
Do you monitor temperature and humidity? Store your reels tails out? Use a library-wind setting?
Share your tape stocks, storage arrangements and experiences with older recordings. Include the formulation and approximate age when discussing a problem—those details help other collectors understand your experience.
