Few jazz albums have challenged convention - and ultimately transformed popular music - as decisively as Time Out.
Recorded during three sessions in 1959 at Columbia’s legendary 30th Street Studio in New York, the album brought together the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet:

Inspired partly by rhythms Brubeck encountered during a US State Department-sponsored tour of Eurasia, Time Out boldly departed from the familiar rhythmic language of jazz. Its unusual metres - including the Turkish-inspired 9/8 pulse of “Blue Rondo à la Turk” and the unforgettable 5/4 rhythm of “Take Five” - were initially considered commercially risky.
Columbia Records president Goddard Lieberson nevertheless supported the project, allowing Brubeck and his quartet to pursue their remarkable experiment.
The early critical response was divided, with some reviewers questioning whether the album’s intricate time signatures belonged within jazz at all. Audiences delivered a very different verdict.
Time Out became one of the most recognisable and commercially successful jazz albums ever released. Paul Desmond’s composition “Take Five” became an international hit and the first jazz single reported to have sold more than one million copies. In 2011, the album was certified double platinum in the United States.
Its visual identity became almost as celebrated as its music. The striking abstract cover was created by S. Neil Fujita, the influential designer whose work helped introduce modern abstract art into Columbia Records’ jazz packaging.
A PRESTIGIOUS AUDIONAUTES 1-STEP EDITION
AudioNautes Recordings now pays tribute to this landmark recording with an ambitious, sonically focused and beautifully presented limited edition.
The new release is presented as an individually numbered 2LP deluxe box set, strictly limited to 1,500 copies worldwide.
Both records are pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Optimal Media, using an advanced 1-Step manufacturing process and cut at 45 RPM for greater groove space, improved transient definition and enhanced musical resolution.
The remastering has been prepared from an archival safety copy of the original stereo master tape. To maximise the available playing area and preserve the strongest possible sound quality, AudioNautes founder Fabio Camorani has revised the original running order, limiting each playing side to only two or three selections. The fourth side is intentionally left blank.
This is not simply another reissue of a familiar classic. It is a carefully considered audiophile presentation created for listeners who want to rediscover the quartet’s rhythmic precision, tonal colour and extraordinary musical interplay with renewed clarity and presence.
From the opening momentum of “Blue Rondo à la Turk” to Joe Morello’s commanding drum feature in “Take Five,” Time Out remains sophisticated, accessible and unmistakably modern.
More than six decades after its original release, it still sounds like music confidently stepping into the future.
