A particularly interesting Akai because 15 ips places it above many of the company’s consumer-orientated decks for serious high-speed analogue use.
For modern prerecorded master-tape collectors, however, track format must be considered carefully. A 4-track machine is not automatically suitable for commercial ¼-inch 2-track master-tape releases simply because it runs at 15 ips.

The ATR-102 is one of the benchmark professional two-track mastering machines.
Its historical importance comes from actual professional mastering use rather than domestic prestige. For the OpenReelToReel guide it belongs in the highest tier alongside machines such as selected Studer, Telefunken and professional mastering transports.
A restored ATR-102 should nevertheless be judged by its exact head block, electronics, alignment, equalisation, tape-speed configuration and restoration quality rather than model number alone.

HiFi Engine’s Akai archive alone contains a very substantial reel-to-reel range, beginning with models such as the 1700, 1710, 1710L, 1710W, 1720L, 1720W, 1721L, 1721W and 1722L, and continuing through later GX-series models including the GX-646, GX-650D, GX-747, GX-747DBX and GX-77. (Hi-Fi Engine)

Every machine will carry one of the following evidence labels:
VERIFIED
Specifications confirmed from reliable documentation.
VERIFIED — CONFIGURATION DEPENDENT
The basic machine is verified, but track format, speed, equalisation, heads or other specifications vary by version.
PARTIALLY VERIFIED
Some specifications have reliable documentation while others still require confirmation.
ARCHIVAL RESEARCH REQUIRED
Model confirmed to exist but full technical documentation has not yet been obtained.
DO NOT ASSUME
A warning used where similarly named models differ significantly.
MASTER-TAPE SUITABILITY RULE
A machine will not receive a five-star Master-Tape Playback rating merely because it:
- accepts 10.5-inch reels;
- has excellent frequency response;
- uses three motors;
- has premium heads;
- is expensive or collectible; or
- can run at 15 ips.
For the highest master-tape rating, the relevant version must also have the correct track geometry, tape speed, equalisation and alignment capability for the tape being reproduced.
