ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY
The history of commercially recorded reel-to-reel tape involves three quite different types of organisation:
LABEL — L
A record company or imprint that released music commercially on reel-to-reel tape.
DUPLICATOR — D
A company or manufacturing division that physically duplicated prerecorded tapes.
MASTER-TAPE PRODUCER — M
A modern producer supplying audiophile tapes copied from, derived from, or created as master recordings.
RECORDING LABEL / PRODUCER — R
A company making its own recordings and subsequently releasing them on open-reel tape.
A company may belong to more than one category.
Historical duplication arrangements were not always permanent. A label might manufacture tapes itself during one period and contract Ampex, Magtec, Stereotape or another duplicator during another. Therefore the identity of the record label printed on a box does not necessarily identify the company that physically duplicated the tape.

Not every prerecorded reel is remotely equivalent.
LEVEL 1 — ORIGINAL SESSION MASTER
The original recording master.
Collector/audio status: Reference source.
LEVEL 2 — ORIGINAL STEREO MIX MASTER
The completed analogue stereo master derived from a multitrack session.
Status: Master source.
LEVEL 3 — 1:1 SAFETY / PRODUCTION MASTER
Real-time copy of the master made for preservation or production.
Status: Extremely high quality when correctly produced.
LEVEL 4 — REAL-TIME COMMERCIAL MASTER-TAPE COPY
Customer tape copied at 1:1 speed.
Typical modern audiophile product.
LEVEL 5 — LOW-RATIO DUPLICATION
Examples include specialist 2:1 or 4:1 manufacture.
Barclay Crocker is the classic historical example of a company deliberately using a relatively low commercial duplication ratio.
LEVEL 6 — HIGH-SPEED MASS DUPLICATION
Historically common in consumer tape manufacture.
Production master and slave tapes could run many times faster than normal playback speed.
Efficient — but potentially inferior to carefully aligned low-ratio or real-time duplication.
