A Pioneer RT-909, Akai GX-747, Technics RS-1700 or similar flagship domestic machine belongs to a different tradition. These machines may be magnificent examples of industrial design, extraordinarily collectible and capable of excellent reproduction, yet they were not necessarily designed around the ¼-inch, 15 ips, two-track mastering standard now commonly associated with premium contemporary master-tape releases.
