Aquarium is a folk rock/reggae/fusion band formed in 1972 from St Petersburg (then Leningrad), Russia. Since rock music was strictly regulated in the Soviet Union in the 70s most artists in the genre resorted to playing venues in private apartments to compete for a contract with the only record label owned by the government called Melodiya.
Аквариум (Aquarium) was one of those controversial bands that always pushed the boundaries of what was allowed. The point where they became more well-known is when they played at the 1980 Tbilisi Rock Festival (in the Republic of Georgia). Although they were banned from the festival for outrageous stage antics, they nevertheless gathered a cult following that continues to this day.
Although Синий альбом (Blue Album) is the debut album by Аквариум (Aquarium) they in fact produced a number of homemade releases before this first proper album was released in 1981. They are typically classified generically as rock, but their albums have completely different sounds, and on this one, they are pretty much acoustic folk with some electric rock guitar and reggae blended in as well. In fact, the very first track reminds me of Bob Dylan, while the second sounds a lot like John Lennon. All lyrics are in Russian. A very interesting historical piece of Soviet Russian history, as this is an important album in the development of the musical industry behind the Iron Curtain. The music here is slightly progressive as it adds some interesting effects and some mild fusion. A decent but not outstanding debut album.
«Синий альбом» группы Аквариум - это первая «естественная» студийная работа коллектива, записанная в январе 1981 года в студии Андрея Тропилло. Альбом стал важной вехой в истории русского рока, закрепив за группой статус лидеров андеграунда.

Поздней осенью 1980 года Тропилло, гипнотически убедив старушку-вахтершу в том, что мы - пионеры, ввел нас в Дом Юного Техника на Охте, где служил руководителем кружка звукозаписи. Играли фанфары, пел хор нелегальных ангелов - началась Новая Эпоха. Дорвавшись до студии, мы попытались было записать "Марину" и "-30", но, вероятно, время тяжелого электрического Аквариума прошло. Наш ударник тбилисского периода Женя Губерман и мистический авангардист Саша Александров (Фагот) как-то растворились в воздухе; Аквариум остался в первоначальной квартетной форме (Дюша, Файнштейн, Гаккель и я). Мы плюнули на "профессионализм", сели в студию и принялись записывать то, что было записывать веселее всего - новое и никому неизвестное. "Железнодорожная Вода" была написана в поезде Ленинград-Солнечное (в Солнечном удалось снять комнату с печкой на всю зиму - жилья в городе не было); Рыжий Чорт, на время мигрировавший в Ленинград, дул в гармошку и поддерживал должную степень анархии; Тропилло самоотверженно работал по десять, а когда было нужно, и по тридцать часов в сутки. Дюша, неожиданно для меня, выступил в роли электрического гитариста и записал соло в "Псе" и собственные "Странные Объекты", чем превратил альбом из коллекции песен в самостоятельное живое существо. Михаил как раз успешно осваивал percussion (по-моему, именно в это время он открыл, что, если в пустую пивную банку насыпать смесь определенных круп и заклеить пластырем, то получающийся шейкер неплохо звучит и выглядит определенно фирменно); Сева, хоть и проболел большую часть записи, но смог внести изрядный элемент психоделии в "Плоскость": он играл, а мы дрались за право крутить ручки единственного присутствовавшего в студии эффекта (который еще сыграет немалую роль в наших записях и первых альбомах "Кино"). Собственно говоря, это был первый порядочный подпольный русский альбом: песни записаны в студии, расставлены в нужном порядке, фотообложка вручную приклеена клеем "Момент" на коробки, облепленные синей бумагой. Из группы довольно идеалистически настроенных странников Аквариум стал реальностью, а значит, - истинным мифом.
