Love You Madly, the 2021 winner of PF’s Writers Choice Award, was captured live in 1982 at Fort Lauderdale’s Club Bubba. Recorded by Criteria Recording Studios’ Legendary Founder Mack Emerman, this is Monty Alexander at his best, with a great band and incredibly high energy performance. Accompanying Alexander on this spirited live date are bassist Paul Berner (Lionel Hampton Orchestra), drummer Duffy Jackson (Milt Jackson, Benny Carter), and percussionist Robert Thomas, Jr. (Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, Carlos Santana).

Drawn from Alexander’s personal collection, the vigorous, imaginative performances on Love You Madly were recorded at the titular Fort Lauderdale, Florida nightclub on August 6, 1982. The recording engineer was the late Mack Emerman, legendary founder of Miami’s Criteria Recording Studios, the state-of-the-art facility where the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers Band, and Aretha Franklin, among many others, had cut some of their biggest hits.

The Kingston, Jamaica-born keyboardist had lived in Miami since his family moved there in 1961, and had known Emerman, a Jazz buff who had played trumpet in his alma mater Duke University’s big band, for many years.

This previously unreleased 1982 Audiophile 24-Track Recording was captured live at the Fort Lauderdale Club Bubba’s by Criteria Recording Studios’ Legendary Founder Mack Emerman. This recording is really important, and documents an underrepresented chapter of Monty’s recording output. It’s Monty with a great band, and the recording has fantastic fidelity. There are incredibly strong performances, with high energy that epitomize Monty at his very best.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

The 2xHD Fusion Mastering System: In the constant evolution of its proprietary mastering process, 2xHD has progressed to a new phase called 2xHD FUSION, integrating the finest analog, with state-of-the-art digital technology.

The mastering chain consists of a selection of high-end vacuum tube equipment. For the recordings on this album, the original 1/4" 15 ips Nagra Master curve, NAB or CCIR master tapes were played on a Nagra-T tape recorder, modified with high-end tube playback electronics, wired with OCC silver cable from the playback head direct to a Nick Doshi tube head preamplifier. The Nagra T, with its four direct drive motors, two pinch rollers and a tape tension head, has one of the best transports ever made. A custom-built carbon fiber head block and a head damping electronic system permit 2xHD FUSION to obtain a better resolution and 3D imaging.
