The International Guide to Music on Open-Reel Tape
The revival of reel-to-reel tape has developed from a small audiophile niche into a genuinely international high-end music format.
Across Europe, North America and Asia, specialist recording studios, independent labels, mastering houses and major record companies are again producing music on open-reel tape. Some record performances directly to two-track analogue masters; others license historic analogue masters and produce real-time copies; still others use high-resolution digital sources followed by carefully engineered analogue duplication.
WHAT DOES “MASTER TAPE COPY” ACTUALLY MEAN?
An Original Master Tape is normally the actual master created during the original recording/mixing process.
A first-generation master copy is copied directly from that master.
A production master or copy master may be created specifically so the original master does not have to be repeatedly played during manufacturing.
A commercial master-tape edition is the tape purchased by the audiophile. Depending on the label, it may be duplicated directly from the original master, from a first-generation production master, or from another carefully controlled source.

15. Who performed the duplication?
BEWARE OF THE “MASTER TAPE” MYTH
A handwritten box containing a famous album is not evidence that the reel came from the recording studio.
For rare vintage tapes, provenance should ideally establish:
Where the tape originated
Who created it
The generation
Recording speed
Equalisation
Track format
Associated studio or label documentation

In 2026 there is an active international ecosystem of analogue recording studios, boutique audiophile labels, mastering engineers, tape manufacturers, specialist distributors, restoration companies, independent musicians, major record labels and dedicated collectors.
Reel-to-reel will never again be a mass-market format. It does not need to be.
For the serious collector, the objective is not simply to accumulate tapes. It is to preserve performances, recording traditions, analogue engineering and the experience of hearing music from a source remarkably close to the one created in the studio.
